Erdogan urges Turks in Germany not to vote for 3 main parties

Bonn, 22 August (deutschenews24.de/dpa)- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on Turks living in Germany not to vote for the three main parties in next month`s general elections.

"Do not make the mistake of supporting them. Not the Christian Democrats [CDU], not the SPD, not the Greens. They are all enemies of Turkey," Erdogan said after exiting Friday prayers in Istanbul.

Germany holds elections next month, with CDU leader Angela Merkel vying for a fourth term as chancellor.

Around one third of the 3 million Turkish immigrants in Germany are eligible to vote.

"This is a struggle of honour for all my citizens living in Germany," Erdogan said, in remarks carried by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Germany and Turkey have been at loggerheads in recent months over a number of grievances.

A key point of contention is Turkey`s jailing of German journalists and a human rights worker. Ankara, meanwhile, is demanding Germany extradite some 4,500 people it accuses of involvement in last year`s failed coup and other allegations.
