Bonn, Jan 21 (deutschenews24.de/dpa)- The long-delayed opening of Berlin`s new airport will not be in 2017, airport head Karsten Muehlenfeld confirmed Saturday.
Although the announcement had been telegraphed long in advance, it still adds another embarassing footnote to the drawn-out process of setting up an international airport in Germany`s capital. The airport was originally set to open in 2011.
The 2017 date was thrown into question earlier this week when it was revealed that there were problems with the doors at the airport. The news came on top of previous reports through the years with problems in a variety of other systems.
"At this moment, we are at a point where we have to say that 2017 can no longer work for an opening," said Berlin Mayor Michael Mueller, who spoke at a meeting in Erfurt, Germany, before Muehlenfeld`s announcement.
